A False Claims Act whistleblower reward is paid to a qualified whistleblower when the government is able to recover funds from a company that committed fraud against it.

Several factors contribute to a whistleblower's reward, including:

  • Total amount recovered. The more recovered, the more you may be rewarded.
  • Timeliness. The sooner you report fraud, the more helpful your tip may be. You must report within the statute of limitations, and only the first whistleblower to report is entitled to a reward.
  • Usefulness of information. The more comprehensive and professionally presented your information is, the more valuable it will be.
  • Your whistleblower legal team. The most critical factor in the success of your claim is the legal team you choose and the quality with which they present your case.

How much can a whistleblower receive?

15-25%

Whistleblower rewards can be 15-25% of the recovery if the government pursues the claim.

25-30%

If the government declines to pursue the claim, rewards can be 25-30% of the recovered amount.

The Department of Justice reports that in 2020 it recovered more than $2.2 billion in settlements and judgments from civil cases of fraud and false claims. $309 million was paid out to whistleblowers who exposed the fraud. In 2021, $5.6 billion was recovered and $237 million was rewarded to whistleblowers.

Every year billions of dollars of government funds are paid to businesses and persons who file or cause to be filed false and fraudulent claims for payment to our federal and state governments. Detection, investigation and prosecution of this fraud is often impossible without the help of whistleblowers.
