Capital One hack suspect may have breached more than 30 organizations

Federal prosecutors say the suspect charged in a massive data breach at Capital One may have hacked more than 30 other organizations. Paige A. Thompson, a 33-year-old former Amazon employee from Seattle, was arrested last month after the FBI said she obtained personal information from more than 100 million Capital One credit applications. There is no evidence the data was sold or distributed to others.

In a memorandum filed ahead of a detention hearing, rescheduled from Thursday to Aug. 22, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Seattle said servers found in Thompson's bedroom contained data stolen from more than 30 unnamed companies, educational institutions and other entities. read more »

An accounting expert who raised red flags about Bernie Madoff ’s Ponzi scheme has a new target: General Electric Co.

In a research report posted online Thursday, Harry Markopolos alleges the struggling conglomerate has masked the depths of its problems, resulting in inaccurate and fraudulent financial filings with regulators. New York Subpoenas Banks, Financial Advisers for Sackler Records

The state claims that the Purdue Pharma owners transferred billions of dollars from the company and hid them in offshore partnerships and other entities.

The New York state attorney general has begun issuing subpoenas to 33 financial institutions and investment advisers with ties to the Sackler family, part of an aggressive effort to track billions of dollars that prosecutors claim the family siphoned out of Purdue Pharma to hide profits gained from the company’s opioid painkillers. read more »

Kraft and Mondelēz Global to Pay $16 Million in Wheat Manipulation Case

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission today announced that it obtained a $16 million penalty and injunction pursuant to a federal court’s entry of a consent order against defendants Kraft Foods Group, Inc. and Mondelēz Global LLC.  The order, entered on August 14, 2019 by the Honorable Judge John Robert Blakey of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, resolves the CFTC’s complaint alleging, among other things, manipulation of the wheat market.

The $16 million penalty is approximately three times defendants’ alleged gain.  The order also enjoins Kraft and Mondelēz Global from engaging in future violations of the manipulation, wash trade, and position limit provisions of the Commodity Exchange Act and CFTC regulations charged in the complaint. read more »
