Team Jamis - Hagens Berman in Yellow at the Amgen Tour of California

Janier Acevedo climbs to stage two victory and leads the overall.

Team Jamis - Hagens Berman scored the biggest win in the team's history when Janier Acevedo crossed the finish line atop the brutal Tram Way climb to win stage two of the Tour of California. The Columbian climber's stage win puts him in the yellow jersey of the race leader going into stage three of North America's most prestigious race.

Stage two of the Amgen Tour of California had all the elements to make it one of the most unforgettable days of bike racing ever held in the US. The hilly 200km stage, starting in Murrieta and ending in Palm Springs, was the longest stage of the race. The course covered nearly 10,000 vertical feet of climbing before it finished at the top of Tram Way, a brutally steep and exposed 5km climb outside of Palm Springs. To top it all off, temperatures hovered in the triple digits the entire day. It was a day of racing that was sure to produce a major shakeup in the general classification.

Early in the race, Ben Jaques-Maynes escaped into the day long breakaway along with three other riders. The escapees, all powerful individual time trialists in their own right, carved out a nearly 12 minute advantage over the chasing peloton. At the top of the 11-mile climb to the first Nissan KOM Point of the day, Ben went over the top first to claim maximum points. The break soldiered on, the heat clearly taking its toll as they baked under the desert sun. As the breakaway approached Palm Springs, Ben soloed off the front and hit the base of the final climb with a tenuous advantage over the charging peloton. He was quickly swept up at the base of the finishing climb as the general classification favorites began to show their cards.

On the climb, the fireworks began to happen. With three kilometers left to race, five riders, including Janier, were in contention for the win. A strong surge whittled the front group down to two. Within the last kilometer, Janier surged ahead, forging a 12 second gap ahead of his nearest chaser as he crossed the line with arms held aloft in victory. As the riders trickled through the line, it was clear that this had been one of the most difficult days on the bike that many had ever seen. When the dust settled, Janier's stage victory catapulted him to the head of the standings. He will start stage three in the yellow jersey of race leader!

Team Jamis - Hagens Berman will be looking to protect Janier's lead in the upcoming stages, starting with stage three's 180km race from Palmdale to Santa Clarita. Please follow along for all the latest news and results!
