Scout leader, confidential documents spark sex-abuse lawsuit

Decades-old abuse allegations against the former leader of a Boy Scout troop on Staten Island have prompted a lawsuit against the Scouting organization, its Staten Island Council and St. Teresa’s R.C. Church in Castleton Corners under the New York State Child Victims Act.

The lawsuit alleges that the organization’s so-called “Ineligible Volunteer Files,” with a subcategory referred to as the “Perversion Files,” which were “collected and maintained in secrecy for at least 70 years, reveal that pedophiles are drawn to scouting and that the Boy Scouts is a sanctuary for child molesters.” read more »

Sexual assault on campus is a public health epidemic

On Oct. 15, the Association of American Universities released the results of a national survey looking at campus climate around sexual assault and sexual misconduct among 33 member universities. The results show that approximately one-third of undergraduate women at USC have experienced at least one incident of nonconsensual sexual contact involving physical force or inability to consent since starting school. On college campuses, sexual assault and sexual misconduct is not just a problem — it is a public health epidemic. read more »
