Fort Hood Found to Have “Toxic Culture” After Sexually Harassed Soldier's Murder

The murder of Vanessa Guillén, a 20-year-old soldier at the sprawling Texas Army base of Fort Hood last April, by another soldier who had sexually harassed her captured headlines across the world.
The public outrage at Guillén's murder forced an independent review of the base, led by a five-member civilian team. The findings found a "deficient climate" at Fort Hood, as well as an "ineffective implementation of the Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) program that resulted in a pervasive lack of confidence, fear of retaliation, and significant underreporting of cases, particularly within the enlisted ranks." read more »

Prominent Chicago Priest Removed From Church Over Decades-Old Sexual Abuse Allegation

Father Michael Pfleger, the longtime pastor at St. Sabina Church and one of the most prominent priests in Chicago, has been removed from the Auburn Gresham parish following revelations of an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor more than 40 years ago.
Cardinal Blase Cupich announced “the difficult news” in a letter to the St. Sabina community Tuesday, adding that Pfleger – who frequently marched with Rev. Jesse Jackson and was the subject of a documentary film – agreed to his request and will live away from the parish during the archdiocese’s investigation. The allegation has also been reported to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and the Cook County state’s attorney’s office, Cupich said. read more »
