Sexual Harassment Is Still the Norm in Health Care

On the two-year anniversary of #MeToo going viral, there has been surprisingly little attention to harassment in medicine. If you can’t think of a high-profile doctor who got “taken down” by the movement the way Matt Lauer, Harvey Weinstein, Louis C.K. and Al Franken did, it’s not because harassment isn’t happening in health care. It’s because harassment is the norm.

Gender discrimination is so prevalent in the field that there are currently ongoing lawsuits against major institutions such as Mount Sinai Health System, Oregon Health & Science University and, most recently, Tulane University. But there are virtually no major reported pieces on any of these situations, and there is little public outcry calling for anyone to resign. Jesuit Prep sued again over sex abuse, this time accusing a priest and coach

A lawsuit, filed by a Dallas lawyer in his 50s, says he was molested in the 1980s by his wrestling coach and the school’s former president.

A fourth former student at Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas has filed a lawsuit alleging he was abused by priests when he was a student there.

The plaintiff, a Dallas lawyer in his 50s, filed the lawsuit this month against the school and the Catholic Diocese of Dallas, among others, saying he was sexually abused in the early 1980s by two Jesuit Prep priests. read more »

‘Sickening’: Top Philly cop charged with sexually assaulting officers he mentored

After years of complaints, Philadelphia Police Department Chief Inspector Carl Holmes, among the highest-ranking commanders in the department, has been arrested and charged with the sexual assaults of three subordinate officers.

Holmes’s arrest follows a long line of grievances from female officers who have alleged a culture of systemic sexual harassment within one of the country’s largest police departments. Two of the alleged victims have publicly accused Holmes of sexual assault in news articles and in court documents for years, describing frightening encounters with a man they say they previously looked up to. read more »
