WHAT’S THE ISSUE?
Hagens Berman’s data breach, privacy and cybersecurity legal team has filed a class-action lawsuit against PowerSchool Holdings Inc. for allegedly failing to secure and safeguard the sensitive personal data of an estimated 60 million students and families in the December 2024 cyberattack.
According to the lawsuit, the data breach occurred through the defendant’s PowerSchool SIS (P-SIS) application, a software system schools and school districts use to manage student records. Through P-SIS, PowerSchool collected and maintained the sensitive data of students, their families and school personnel.

ABOUT THE LAWSUIT VS. POWERSCHOOL
PowerSchool built a billion-dollar corporation by collecting and storing highly sensitive data of minor students, their families and school educators through its software products that it sells to schools and school districts. The lawsuit alleges PowerSchool failed to protect the sensitive data of students and their families from cybercriminals.
The lawsuit further alleges PowerSchool was aware of the significant amount of personal data in its possession, and the increased risk of a cyberattack, but did not safeguard the data from the breach.
In addition, attorneys believe the exposed information will likely be sold repeatedly on the dark web and that affected children and their families now face an “ongoing risk of identity theft, which is heightened here by the loss of social security numbers—the gold prize for identity thieves.”
YOUR CHILD’S RIGHT TO PRIVACY
PowerSchool’s software is commonly used across the United States, meaning the data breach in December 2024 could have left you and your children at high risk for identity theft and other harms. The firm will investigate PowerSchool for negligence and violations of state and federal laws and seeks to secure financial relief for the many students and families impacted by the breach.
