WHAT’S THE ISSUE?
Hagens Berman is investigating a high-voltage battery defect in 2020-2024 Ford Escape and 2021-2024 Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), putting the vehicles at risk of loss of power and spontaneous fire.
AFFECTED MODELS
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 20,000 vehicles may be affected, including:
- 2020-2024 Ford Escape PHEV
- 2021-2024 Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring (PHEV)
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY FORD IS AFFECTED?
Ford mailed recall notices to owners in January and February 2025. Ford has instructed owners to refrain from charging their high-voltage batteries until a remedy is available and implemented. Ford has not yet offered a remedy.
FORD FIRE DEFECT EXPLAINED
According to the recall, the affected vehicles may experience an internal short circuit in one or more of the lithium-ion cells in the high-voltage battery packs. In this case, drivers may see a warning in the instrument cluster and may experience:
- A loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash and injury.
- Battery thermal venting potentially leading to vehicle fire, increasing the risk of injury and property damage.
Ford advised owners not to charge the high-voltage batteries in affected vehicles in February 2025. Since then, owners have been left without the ability to safely charge their vehicles due to the alleged fire risk, essentially nullifying the vehicle’s electric/hybrid functions. As of February 2025, Ford has identified seven high-voltage battery failures and one vehicle fire suspected to arise from the defect.
