WHAT’S THE ISSUE?
Hagens Berman’s consumer and environmental protection legal team is investigating Procter & Gamble, the maker of Charmin toilet paper, for allegedly making false claims about the environmental impact of its products. The company touts Charmin’s sustainability, proclaiming it “helps protect forests” and promising consumers “We are committed to helping keep forests as forests.” Behind Charmin’s promise that it “maintains healthy forests for generations to come,” Procter & Gamble — a multibillion-dollar corporation — is cutting down boreal forest, in spite of its excessive greenwashing. Its packaging also references environmentally friendly associations.
ABOUT CHARMIN’S ECO-FRIENDLY CLAIMS
Attorneys investigating the issue cite Procter & Gamble’s rampant eco-friendly claims on its products, website and other marketing materials, in which the conglomerate says, “Responsible sourcing is an important issue for not just our business but, more importantly, for the environment and people who depend on it… Our sourcing prohibits deforestation, respects the rights of Indigenous peoples (FPIC), and protects biodiversity. For every tree Charmin uses, at least two are regrown.”
Specifically, Charmin’s deceptive packaging urges consumers to “Learn how Charmin helps to protect, grow and restore trees” alleging a Rainforest Alliance, Forest Allies affiliation. It touts a commitment to protect, grow and restore through advances in responsible forestry, including a promise to the public that all of Charmin’s toilet paper products use pulp certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and that Charmin only sources fiber for its toilet paper from working forests, which provide a renewable supply of wood.
According to the firm’s investigation, Procter & Gamble’s outward facing eco-campaign conceals a dark side of deforestation and disregard for the planet’s precious ecosystems.
PROCTER & GAMBLE’S ACTUAL PRACTICES
Hagens Berman accuses Procter & Gamble of using these eco-friendly promises only to motivate environmentally conscious purchasers to drive its revenue stream. The firm has uncovered mass deforestation of boreal forests, all for the sake of making toilet paper. The National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has just released its Issue With Tissue report stating toilet paper companies are destroying Canada’s boreal forests. Boreal forests are crucial to our planet, as they store 30% to 40% of land-based carbon.
